The HARTIKA PARKAN composite system, a relative newcomer to the market, has enjoyed considerable interest due to its versatility, simple installation and exceptional durability. Significantly, fencing is the core area of application for HARTIKA PARKAN, however, associating it solely with the construction of fences is a far reaching simplification.

We have to remember that HARTIKA PARKAN is a line of products which relies on high quality PVC based wood composites. The structure of materials used in its production ensures system elements are exceptionally resistant to the elements. Composite wood does not rot, decay and is not susceptible to adverse effects of mould and moss. The HARTIKA PARKAN system elements stand up to difficult weather conditions. They do not require periodic maintenance, painting or treatments.

The HARTIKA PARKAN system comprises a number of modules which include posts, boards as well as finishing elements.

Keeping the considerable durability of the system in mind, one cannot turn a blind eye to a number of features which facilitate application in many more areas that just fencing.

We often face a dilemma as to how to aesthetically separate an area on a balcony, terrace or perhaps other spaces around a building. To do that, one has to ensure the partition structure is light resulting in space savings and also that it satisfies the required intimacy condition.

Here HARTIKA PARKAN system partitions fit the bill perfectly. A partition made using the system will take up little space and deliver a durable structure resistant to the elements. One which will be pleasing to the eye. The partitions, on account of varied available colours and variety of shapes will be at home both as part of contemporary architecture as well as more traditional façades. HARTIKA PARKAN system elements can be used to create openwork or full panel structures, to establish a separate space or just to accentuate the boundary of a partitioned area.

We have designed a line of garden planters and flowerpots based on HARTIKA PARKAN system elements, simply perfect for creating a pleasant green atmosphere on terraces, balconies, in gardens and also on driveways, in car parks and wherever the surface is such (cobblestone, asphalt, etc.) that it is impossible to plant directly in the soil.

And of course our ideas are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the possibilities offered by the system. We are certain that more ambitious customers will be able to create many more interesting solutions based on HARTIKA PARKAN system elements.

It should be added that the elements, on account of their durability, do not require specialist maintenance to protect them against the onset of winter or the elements. In particular they are frost resistant.

Shelters for facilities

A house is the central point of every property. Regardless of the style of the building, both for detached houses as well as multi-family dwellings, certain facilities are required by the residents. Shelters for bins, bicycle stands or even sheds are some of the moist common structures of this type.

Shelters for household wastes made out of traditional materials such as sheet metal or wood are susceptible to rapid deterioration, especially when we are talking about multi-family dwellings. However, shelters of this type made using HARTIKA PARKAN system elements do not suffer from such ailments.

Our boards with a lip will be perfects for walls of all such shelters and their durability as well as resistance to the elements means homeowners or building managers will be free to do other things.

It is worth remembering that the material used to build a fence has a large impact on the character of the entire real property. Simple concrete fencing structures are most often associated with contemporary architecture. If owners decide to opt for a fence made out of natural materials, the property will have a much cosier feel.

Apart of visual attributes, each of the aforementioned materials also comes with a series of parameters which reflect its use properties. In particular these parameters include durability as well as construction and maintenance costs.

The HARTIKA PARKAN composite fencing system, a relative newcomer to the market, was designed to cater for universal uses and to be free of design limitations – whilst at the same time to deliver long-lasting and cost free maintenance by eliminating the need for perioding maintenance.

The structure of the composite material is such that system elements exhibit parameters required to erect a durable and stable fence. These characteristics are what makes the HARTIKA PARKAN system stand out from fences made out of natural wood or painted materials which need renovating as time goes by. Wood, even if regularly maintained, will be less durable than the composite used for the HARTIKA PARKAN system. This stems from the wood composite's resistance to moisture which, when it comes to natural wood, can cause exceptionally harmful effects, particularly in the form of board deformation.

Are you weary of collecting all the parts required to erect a fence? Non-matching boards, profiles of posts? In designing the HARTIKA PARKAN system we solved this issue by offering a set of elements which can be used to erect a complete fence – and can be customised to march your needs and aesthetic requirements. The system comprises posts, fencing boards of different shapes and sizes as well as various finishing elements.

Standard fencing heights: 140, 155 and 202 cm with 200 or 250 cm wide panels. The HARTIKA PARKAN system makes it possible to build customised structures, with heights and widths selected according to the investor's needs.

The fencing boards have been designed to facilitate practically any panel composition. Full, half-openwork or openwork panels can be built, to instil a touch of lightness to the fence and create more open spaces.

Floor of a garden jacuzzi gazebo – a triple challenge

The flooring material had to satisfy three basic conditions – durability, load bearing and safety. A fourth, more subjective condition called upon the customer's aesthetic requirements. The plastic had to be durable to ensure good attachment to the surface and to survive intact despite difficult weather conditions and being left to its own devices out of season.

The floor also had to withstand a tub with water and three people, a weight of more than 1500 kg – and this required a material with high load bearing parameters. The third challenge was to eliminate the risk of slipping on a wet floor, injury against a sharp corner, burning by touching a hot surface or splinters. The floor had to be non-slip but also pleasant for the foot in terms of smoothness, hardness and temperature.

Four materials were in the running – granite, concrete, ceramics and composite wood. Ceramic tiles were the first to be rejected by our customer – due to the risk of them becoming detached from the substrate, heating up excessively through exposure to the sun and becoming slippery when wet. Granite slabs were appreciated for their durability and load bearing – however lost out when it came to safety (no resistance to becoming excessively hot and slippery). Concrete blocks came close to winning, as these satisfied most of the customer's requirements – however aesthetic qualities played their part here.

In the end the customer opted for composite wood. It delivered the required load bearing capacity, durability regardless of the weather conditions (also in winter and out of season when no one was looking after the gazebo) and safety – including low decking board flammability and heat accumulation, no splinters, irregularities or sharp edges. It is also non-slip (more about the properties of composite wood here)

Thus the aesthetic factor also played a role in choosing composite wood – as well as the fact that the customer was able to select a decking board colour to match the remaining gazebo elements as closely as possible.

A composite balcony: not only for city dwellers

Composite decking is durable and resistant to the elements. There is no problem adapting it to any shape of floor space. Forget about laborious and expensive maintenance, as we discussed in this article. The decking was not designed solely for terraces - it is perfect for balconies, for that cosy garden feel right in the heart of a city. It is also ideal for multi-family houses or hotels at seaside resorts, in the mountains of by the lakeside.

Design inspirations: wanted!

Modern residential architecture is increasingly interested in creating spaces and caring for the residents' comfort - alternatives are sought for basic and soulless architectural behemoths in order to retrieve their lost charisma. With that in mind, architectural studios often reach for spacious balconies and loggias to instil a modern and cosy feel to interiors.

Examples of such designs include the Swiss Garden Tower apartment blocks with protruding balconies and climbing shrubs, community housing in Berlin with spacious balconies or the mosaic balconies idea in Poznań.

The mysterious.... balcony! What potential is it hiding?

There is a plethora of options for your balcony - an oasis of clam, and additional "room" or place for people to meet. It can also be an expression of its user's artistic inclinations. If looked after, bursting with greenery, it can be a heaven for those seeking peace and quiet. Summer is the time when we spend most time on a balcony, idling on our favourite deckchair, reading a book or chatting with those dearest to us. Its appearance affects the mood of guests and hosts.
It is also a place where cumbersome items and tools can be stored, which would otherwise be in the way, especially in smaller apartments and houses without garages. Additionally, if well composed into the architecture, it will make the entire building more attractive, elegant and pleasant to look at!

Looking for the best results - what to do and what to avoid?

In opting for greenery, pay attention the direction your balcony is facing and the needs of the plants you are choosing! Not every species likes a lot of sunlight, some plants will have larger water and fertiliser requirements and some may be particularly susceptible to changing weather conditions or pests. A balcony - particularly on the ground floor - is also inviting for the unwanted guests! To avoid unpleasant surprises, think about enclosing it and avoid keeping expensive items there.

Rain or snow, dust, freezing temperatures and leaves - these things are a nightmare not only for terrace owners but also those with balconies. As we mentioned at the outset, composite decking will significantly reduce the owner's headaches - they are resistant to extreme weather conditions, easy to clean and do not require impregnation.

Arrange the perfect balcony: a reflection of your inner self!

You can customise your balcony so that it matches your interior design and obtain a shape and size which you can arrange as you see fit. Remember that a beautiful balcony corresponds with the with the surroundings and echoes the character and passions of its users! If you want to establish a green heaven, then consider urban jungle style, which will transform your balcony into a lavish garden! Brown composite decking will add a touch of mystery to its appearance and will be a perfect match for its natural look. It will also be an ideal surface for blankets and cushions - often seen on balconies of this type instead of classic furniture.

Scandinavian style is also green and natural, albeit much more toned down. Minimalistic shape and neutral colour furniture and flowerpots are to be found here. Light or brown composite decking in cooler shades will be right - it will go hand in hand with the whites, greys and black touches.

A Provence style balcony is an alternative lying between opulence and elegant minimalism. Similarly to Scandinavian style, it shies away from bright colours - however it creates an impression of being somewhat messy and romantic. Delicate greys, violets and pale greens are the modus operandi.

WPC composite - what exactly is it?

In the construction market composites are known under the acronym WPC. It comes from the English language and means wood plastic composite. In fact, a composite material usually consists of at least two components - a so-called matrix which is a plastic material and wood particles. In the manufacturing process, the composite materials are combined under high pressure and temperature to form a homogeneous mass. Basically, this is where the similarity of composite materials ends. There are a number of differences that affect durability, resistance to changing climatic conditions and appearance.

The main difference is the type of warp used in composite boards. This matrix can consist of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE or HDPE). The latter two materials are often designated as polyolefins; unlike PVC, they are products derived from petroleum refining.

Which composite material is worth choosing?

The aforementioned differences in materials from which composite boards are made have an impact on their significant usability and durability. They originate from the characteristics of the polymers, which were used as the matrix of the composite material. Below we present the main differences in physical and mechanical properties of particular polymers, which are inherited by the final composite product made with their use.

The presented comparison clearly shows that in each of the parameters the PVC-based matrix wins decisively. This material is harder, more resistant to destruction, undergoes significantly less deformation under the influence of changing weather conditions (temperature changes) and does not spread fire.

PVC guarantees terrace durability in the European climate zone!

PVC composite boards due to their high resistance, exceptional surface hardness and ease of maintenance are a well-known terrace material used in the construction industry for many years. They are characterized by low abrasiveness - they are resistant to scratches and mechanical damage, they do not absorb moisture and thus do not crumble over the years. Their high resistance to UV radiation means that they do not fade or soften under its influence, and the polymerization process used in their production ensures their strength at low temperatures.

Unlike PVC based composites, PP and HDPE boards are easier to scratch even when used lightly. Their reduced density makes them significantly less resistant to low temperatures. They are also highly susceptible to changes in weather conditions and sunlight - under their influence they deform relatively more easily, crumble, and lose their color. Due to their inherent "softness", their surface is usually sanded or smooth. PVC-based composite boards in order to give them a texture similar to wood have a brushed surface, which reduces their slipperiness, and to the touch creates a pleasant feeling of contact with natural wood.

European manufacturers - safety and protection for the user!

Composites based on polypropylene and polyethylene usually come from countries in the Far East. They are often offered by manufacturers who are not bound by the strict legal restrictions applied by European manufacturers. As a result, the offered products do not have the features of construction products, they are often devoid of hygienic certificates, and their sale is driven by their low price, not the real utility value.

PVC boards have a fire resistance class B defined on the basis of EU standards - indicating non-flammability, in contrast to products containing polymers of reduced durability, which are characterized by fire spreading. PVC-based composite decking is also 100% renewable, which contributes more to environmental protection. Their physical-mechanical properties guarantee a longer useful life, and they do not emit any harmful substances into the environment.

Opt for timeless terrace style and elegance combined with durability!

Due to the presence of petroleum derivatives composite boards basing on PP, PE and HDPE pose a risk of safe use, and the increased content of wood materials reduces their durability. Often after just a few seasons, visible deformation of their working surface can be observed. Planks made of low-grade polymers are also susceptible to color changes and easy to rub off.

The secret to the appearance of composite wood is the properly selected proportions of wood dust in relation to the other components, as well as the high quality materials used in their production. Proper sanding methods prove the hardness of the material, ensuring that composites are safe and non-slip. Thanks to the care given to the quality of PVC boards, they retain their shape and durability and enjoy their beauty for years.

Telling the difference between "poor" and high grade decking.

1. Price.
PP and HDPE composites are widely available at lower prices than PVC composite decking. This difference is due to the significantly higher cost of PVC compared to polyolefin matrix prices. An additional factor affecting the price is the cost of production. Manufacturing PVC composite, due to its increased hardness and temperature resistance, requires more energy.

2. Board dimensions.
Price is not the only determinant of PVC composites. As mentioned earlier, composite boards made from polyolefins are mainly imported. In order to facilitate transportation (which is usually done in sea containers), these boards are usually shorter than the production standard in Europe. Their length is about 2.5 m and results from the selection of dimensions with a view to optimizing transport costs.

3. Appearance.
Boards made on the basis of polyolefins have thicker, more massive walls. This is necessary because polyolefin composites are inherently less resistant to bending and pressure. In order for them to meet the required resistance parameters, it is necessary to increase the amount of material contained in the board. This allows the board to have the required strength, but does not improve its resistance to weathering and surface degeneration. It is also worth finding out the maximum spacing of the joists recommended by the supplier. The more flabby the composite decking is, the more densely it should be supported by joists. PVC composite boards are supported every 50 cm as a standard. In the case of composites based on PP, PE and HDPE this distance is often limited to about 30 cm. This means that almost twice as many joists and fasteners (clips and screws) are required per meter of terrace width.

4. Smell.
Boards made of polyolefin have an odour commonly associated with plastics. Sometimes their composition is supplemented with aromatic substances who are aimed on neutralization of unfavorable scent experiences of their users. The smell of the decking becomes stronger especially when they are heated up in the sun. In addition, during the cutting of the boards the polyolefin warp may be melted due to friction and may adhere to the sides of the saw blade. In the oposite PVC-based composite decking have a natural wood smell, which is noticeable mainly after cutting, on the edges of freshly cut boards. They do not emit any unnatural odours, nor do they irritate the smell, even when heated to high temperatures. During cutting they behave like natural wood without leaving any traces on cutting tools.

5. Technical and quality documentation.
As a standard, the products approved for use in construction are provided with documentation including a technical approval. This document is issued by an accredited national or European unit (e.g. Institute of Building Technology) and specifies, among other things, the basic physical and mechanical parameters of a construction product. It also contains the manufacturer's designation and a list of basic components of the product. Most imported composite boards are not subjected to the rigors of construction assessment and, in principle, should not be used as a construction product. An additional element that helps to determine the reputation of the product is the fire resistance classification and hygienic certificate. In contrast to PVC composite boards, polyolefin-based composites are not able to achieve in tests the parameters allowing them to be classified as non-flammable materials (class B). Their fire resistance class is C, which means that they are inflammable and spread fire.
